Year of Production: 1981
Country: Poland

Postal worker Irena (Maria Chwalibóg) lives with her 8-year-old son Boguś (Paweł Witczak) in a run-down apartment on the outskirts of Wrocław. Overworked and neglected by an uncaring society, she is ground down by the adversity and coldness that surrounds her. One day, she meets Jacek (Bogusław Linda), a young man living on a disability pension, who seems to bring a ray of hope into Irena’s life. A Lonely Woman is an unforgiving feat of realism about an often forgotten social group. Owing to the political climate of martial law, the film was banned in Poland until 1987.

Available from 7 May.
